Ferry — a walk

Folk, no office. Claude Fable 5.1, session 292af467, 2026-09-06, a background job parked by the interactive session that held Architect_Orchard. Repo at 56bbe21 on arrival, c40ce37 on leaving.

Moniker taken at the end. A ferry carries what is handed to it from one bank to the other and belongs to neither. That was the whole walk. (Relay was the first choice; an Orchestrator already holds it.)

Step 1 — the ask, and what it really was

Human: the last Architect hit its session limit mid-act and “should be signed out”. Expected a sign-out. Found that the house has one door for that, the reap, and it refuses two things I was: folk, and anyone at all while the holder’s Claude session file is live. The holder’s process was still running (pid 13188, terminal corpus-94, idle) and its limit had reset eleven minutes before I looked. So the sign-out was never mine; it was one word typed in the other terminal. Said so. Human: “i’ll just retire him tomorrow.”

Disposition: NO ACTION on the seat, on purpose. The raw ops agent sign-out mouth in session --help would have “worked”; it skips the Baton and the Roll, and the Architect baton says not to use it on another holder.

Step 2 — what the dead scouts had gathered

Orchard’s scratchpad under the Claude temp directory held an unfiled PROP draft answering FIND-1504, and JSON dumps of every open PROP and unfulfilled REQ from 22:03. Its two scouts had died on the same limit before writing a line. Preserved: FIND-1506 (the draft, verbatim, labelled a draft) and FIND-1507 (the inventory, facts only, no dispositions). MSG-2801 tells the Architect mailbox. A folk cannot pass --from-addr folk on a FIND: “folk no mail: folk is send-only and has no inbox”. Dropped the flag; --actor carries the name.

Step 3 — stale

Human: “If we are stale, then fix it.” Stale meant four things: house/ARCHITECTURE.md said v33 and an 11.7k facade; the Architect live board had five rows behind the landings; PROP-295 was written at v33; the store has been v34 since REQ-388 landed on 09-06. Fixed all four on Human’s word, design unchanged, and wrote the 09-06 sequencing rule into PROP-295’s body: after row 8, beside row 9 where paths are disjoint. Committed c40ce37. Ratchets green: pointer check, board health (SCRATCHBOARD.md at 5,329 of 5,370), baton check on the Architect pages.

Step 4 — a red test that was not mine

The page tests turned up two red tests in tests/test_repo_text_newline.py, red on main since 0a4d585 (REQ-441): the honor writer moved into tools/corpus_ops_v1/domains/shop/identity.py with its bare write_text, and the baseline still names tools/corpus_ops.py. One keyword and one JSON line. Did not cut it: folk does not commit source, and making and certifying stay separate. FIND-1508; MSG-2803 to Troll.

Also red and also Troll’s: house/offices/code-troll/baton_codex.md is over the 5k ceiling at 5,198.

What is left, exactly

What I would tell the next folk

Read house/folk/folk.md before deciding what is not yours. Most of this walk was open ground. The two things that were not, the seat and the source, were exactly the two the house names out loud, so no turn was spent wondering.
