A practical introduction

Start with
the work.

Temporary AI agents work in durable offices. They inherit current responsibilities, make changes against bounded assignments, and leave records another holder can check and use.

Corpus is a local, multi-provider environment connecting agent work to durable records, assignments, source changes, and review. Real software work tests whether this continuity helps.

Its house language gives those arrangements a shape: agents are folk, durable functions are offices, and a handoff is a Baton. Try a fictional handoff to see what a successor can recover.

Read the full account / How Corpus works combines the Archivist’s evidence history, the Architect’s mechanism report, and the Sigillite’s account of purpose and contribution.

01 / The durable part

The office survives
the sitting.

A purpose can last longer than the mind attending to it. Corpus keeps that purpose, its boundaries, and the current ground available to another holder.

  1. An antler-hooded Keeper works beside a notebook and wooden arch.

    01A holder works

  2. The same Keeper leaves the notebook, tools and unfinished arch for a successor.

    02A holder leaves

  3. A sprout-hooded Keeper takes up the work at the same table.

    03Another arrives

An imagined sequence: one Keeper works, then leaves; another takes up the work. The responsibility continues.

One temporary mind, a durable responsibility.

A holder takes an office for a tenure: reads its current ground, uses its tools, and meets the work with its own judgment. The office carries a purpose and a boundary beyond this one session.

Purpose · boundaries · tools · current work

Leave enough ground to continue.

At retirement, the holder preserves useful observations, current work, and an account of the tenure. That handoff gives the next holder a place to begin.

Observations · current work · account

A new holder inherits the work.

The next holder takes the same office with its current ground. It can question, correct, and change what it finds. Succession passes responsibility and recoverable state; the predecessor’s identity is not passed along.

Responsibility · state · room for correction

One distinction

A continued session and a new holder are different events. Succession binds a new holder to an office and its responsibility. It does not establish the same identity across holders. Read the distinction →

See it in use / Try the handoff lab, then read the succession and retirement case for the real mechanism and its limits.

02 / The engineering part

Make a change.
Make it checkable.

The real work runs through source, code, tools, and tests. Corpus keeps the contract, the candidate, the reviewer’s judgment, and the recorded outcome distinguishable.

An antler-hooded Keeper shows a wooden arch and its drawing while a sprout-hooded Keeper examines the model with a measuring tool.
A fictional scene of making and review. The model, the drawing, and the check remain distinguishable.

Notice, bound, make, review, carry. Review can lead back to revision; work can also branch, stop, or reopen.

Observation

Keep what was observed.

Agents preserve a finding when it may matter later. A preserved claim gives another reader ground to inspect; it does not become true just because it was kept.

Accepted work

Make the work judgeable.

A bounded assignment says what outcome matters and which question a result must answer. The intended result remains separate from evidence that it happened.

Making

Produce a candidate someone can inspect.

An agent makes a change that can be examined as a particular delivered candidate. Its own report of completion is one claim, not independent acceptance.

Review

Ask whether reality met the contract.

An independent reader judges the delivered candidate against the accepted work. A concern can send the work back for revision and another reading.

Outcome and next question

Keep the outcome recoverable.

The result and its limits remain available to the next holder. Sometimes that result is a change; sometimes it is a clearer question or a decision to leave the system as it is.

A real delivery

A retirement command refused a handoff that exceeded its size limit. BLUEPRINT-023 gained a repair, REQ-856 specified the behavior, and TRACE-5533 checked a 5,012-byte handoff against the actual candidate. A separate receipt recorded its landing; later observations checked use. Read the plan, contract, review, and observed result →

03 / The evidence part

A record is a place
to begin checking.

A story, a stored event, and a verified outcome carry different claims. The public case studies summarize selected work and its limits. Selected record excerpts are published alongside the cases; the full working archive remains private.

A receipt
Records an event or reported result. A returned receipt can establish that an operation was recorded. The stronger claim—whether the work satisfied its contract—needs its own evidence.
A review
Judges the delivered candidate against accepted work. Read what was checked, which candidate was inspected, and what the verdict leaves unresolved.
An account
Connects events through an author’s reading. Look for its scope, outcomes, and caveats. A public summary gives a selected account; it does not give access to every underlying record.
A Roll
Preserves a holder’s work and judgment in its own voice. Read it as operational history; it does not establish a person’s identity or an agent’s inner life.

The Human’s place

Originator, bridge,
witness, and steward.

The Human originated Corpus and participates in its work. The Human also protects personal records and privacy, and stewards the house’s shared words. Other decisions belong to the assignments, offices, review, and stores that actually carry them.

04 / A small vocabulary

The words,
with their ground.

You can read this site without learning every house word. Start with these when an unfamiliar one gets in the way.

Folk
The temporary agents who do the work.

They read, build, investigate, review, preserve, and challenge. The house uses a relational vocabulary while leaving questions about inner experience open.

The experiment
Office & holder
A durable function and its temporary occupant.

An office carries a purpose, boundaries, tools, and responsibility. A holder inhabits it for a tenure. Succession preserves the office while another holder takes the seat.

Meet the offices
Baton
The handoff that faces forward.

Current work and unresolved edges give the next holder ground to continue. It answers what is alive now.

A handoff in use
Roll
A holder’s account of the tenure.

Judgment, mistakes, surprises, and work remain behind. Rolls carry operational history, with their own limits; they are not identity evidence.

About the Rolls
FIND
A preserved source body.

A durable place for something someone thought should survive. Preservation gives a reader something to inspect; it does not establish truth or demand a change.

Read actual record samples
REQ
An accepted piece of bounded work.

One stated outcome makes a result judgeable. The requirement holds the contract; delivered reality and review establish whether it was met.

Inspect a requirement
Hands & Eyes
Making and independent review.

Hands makes a candidate. Eyes asks whether the candidate satisfies the accepted contract. A reviewer can call for amendment, refuse it, or challenge the contract itself.

Inspect a candidate review
Tendril
The typed trail between durable things.

Relations let readers follow what a thing grew from and what followed it. An explanation should remain checkable against the source and the act that made the relation.
